I was brought up on a Mid Canterbury sheep & cropping farm and attended Rokeby Primary School & Ashburton College. I graduated from Massey University with a BVSc in 1975 and commenced practice here with Clutha Vets in Balclutha in January 1976. While initially involved in the full range of mixed practice activities, in latter years my main interest has centered on sheep health & production. I am a past president of the Society Of Sheep & Beef Cattle Veterinarians of the NZVA and have been actively involved in encouraging, promoting and disseminating information to the farming community and the veterinary profession over a large number of years. As well as researching certain problems in the farming community such as Salmonella brandenburg, watery mouth in lambs and lice control issues to name but a few, presenting papers at national and international conferences I have written a number of booklets on issues as diverse as ill-thrift, dipping, Cobalt/B12 deficiency and most recently internal parasitism management. Articles I have written often appear in the farming press. In addition I write the regular Clutha Vets newsletter to sheep farmers. I am one of the two “resident vets” on the national lunchtime radio programme “The Ballance Agrinutrients Farming Show” that has been broadcast locally for quite a number of years and for the last few years syndicated nationally. Married to Lois we have three daughters – all grown up and fled the nest. Outside of work I enjoy keeping a relatively large garden under control and sampling the odd wee dram of single malt from my collection, at present numbering 80 or so different bottles – or sampling any one else’s bottles for that matter!
